Asbestos Products - Asbestos Plastic Cement
'Plastic cement' refers to a range of substances. One such product is used as a joining substance with materials such as polystyrene and PVC pipes used in plumbing systems. The cement causes the plastic surfaces to melt, effectively bonding them together.
Another type of plastic cement is a blend of Portland cement and other ingredients specifically designed for use with plaster and stucco, acting as a sealant.
'Asphalt-asbestos plastic cement' was a combination of asbestos fibres mixed with a chemical solvent. This product was used in roofing to provide waterproofing and fire resistance.
Asbestos plastic cement is regarded as a low risk material that may be managed in-situ. The cement binds the asbestos fibres, preventing them becoming airborne under normal circumstances.
However, if the asbestos plastic cement is deteriorating or you plan to carry out refurbishment work that will disturb the material, dust containing asbestos fibres may become airborne and pose a health risk.
We recommend asbestos testing by our experienced surveyors to determine whether or not asbestos fibres are present in the plastic cement. We will assess the risk to you and your family or staff and give you free advice on how to safely manage, repair or remove the asbestos plastic cement.
